A Herald Sun survey has caused shockwaves after it revealed AFL players drinking levels to be up to six times the rate of other young Australian men.
AFL Players Association Chair Peter Jackson said he is disturbed by the figures but not surprised.
“We’ve known for some time that non-footballers just aren’t keeping their end up when it comes to binge drinking.”
“The players can’t be expected to do everything and we really need to see other men pick up their game.”
“I urge them to get up to the 86 standard drinks average maintained by the AFL’s finest.”
Non footballers have also been shocked by the statistics.
“I knew we weren’t up to the elite level but I just can’t believe how far behind we are,” said one young man.
“It’s really worrying.”
