Hipsters around the world have been appalled at the news that Ben Affleck will play Justin Vernon in the new Hollywood film about American indie folk band, Bon Iver.
The multi-million dollar For Emma tells the story of the making of Bon Iver’s classic album For Emma, Forever Ago. Ben Affleck will play Vernon, the bearded musician who, distressed at the break-up of his band and relationship, retreats to a cabin in Wisconsin to record one of the most emotional and beloved records of the 21st Century.
The news that Ben Affleck is to play Justin Vernon has traumatised a hipster community still reeling from the mainstream success of Birdy’s Bon Iver cover, Skinny Love.
Calls have come for a younger and more sensitive actor to play the role of Vernon. Names put forward include Ryan Gosling, Alexander Skarsgård and even Justin Vernon himself.
However, the casting of Ben Affleck in the big budget hipster epic should come as no surprise. In a shift away from the comic book adaptations that have dominated the American box office, four of the top 25 films this year have been so-called “hip-drams”. The most successful, the gritty Sonic Youth biopic Daydream Nation is expected to sweep the pool at next year’s Oscars.
A grassroots campaign to have Affleck removed from the Bon Iver film has already commenced. Distressed hipsters are being encouraged to send hand-written letters, telegrams or personalised audio cassette messages to the film’s producers to let them know how uncool the casting decision probably is.
