After the incredible success of its Big Bash T20 cricket competition, Cricket Australia has announced that next year’s Big Bash season will be more than twice as long.
Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland says the 2016-2017 Big Bash will be extended to include a series of longer Big Bash games, which will last for up to five days at a time.
“These longer Absolutely Awesome matches will be a real test of a cricketer’s skills,” says Mr Sutherland.
“Rather than being restricted to four overs, bowlers will be able to bowl as many overs as they want.”
“Likewise, the batting team can bat until it loses all its wickets. And teams can even bat twice!”
Mr Sutherland says the Absolutely Awesome games will feature the best cricketers from around the world, playing for international franchises named after the countries in which the franchises are based.
“In a break from Big Bash tradition, we’re also going to trial a red ball and distinctive white playing strips.”
Mr Sutherland has no doubt the new, longer Big Bash season will be a big winner with fans.
“We’ve been getting huge crowds to Big Bash games that only last three hours. Imagine how many people will flock to the grounds to see the longer Absolutely Awesome matches!”
