Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has called a snap election for January 31.
The Premier has explained to the media that his decision is not a cynical political move but is to avoid a clash with Channel 9 renovation TV show The Block.
“It’s no secret I’m a Blockhead,” said Mr Newman.
“Being Premier is a full-time job and I’ve missed a lot of great TV over the last 3 years.”
“It’s easy for Lisa and I to catch up with HBO series on DVD. But television events like The Block and MasterChef are a different matter.”
“Take last year. I taped The Block finale but Jeff Seeney told me who won before I had a chance to watch it.”
“This year’s season is called The Block Triple Threat! It’s pretty exciting.”
“I don’t want Queensland voters distracted by The Block during such an important election campaign.”
“And, hey, if I lose my seat like everyone says, I can at least watch the whole season of The Block this time.”
“That’s why I’m calling an election before the television ratings period begins.”
