Premier Campbell Newman has vowed to crack down on the fitness instructors and personal trainers terrorising the streets of Queensland.
Mr Newman said the problem was so bad in parts of the Brisbane CBD that it was impossible to walk a block without being approached to join a gym.
“It’s awful enough being asked to give money to a charity,” said the Premier. “But to have some stranger imply you are unfit is offensive.”
Mr Newman said that his LNP government would immediately deal with the “exercise bikie” problem by introducing Laws Against Street Harassment.
Under the LASH legislation, it will be an offence for anyone who is part of, or associated with, an “exercise bikie” organisation to approach a member of the public on the street. Fitness instructors and personal trainers will also be banned from wearing their uniforms in public after 8 a.m.
Mr Newman said that anyone who breaks the new laws will be banned from ever holding “a real job” outside the fitness industry.
“I’m confident the LASH laws will make our streets safer,” said Mr Newman. “From now on, Queenslanders will only be stopped in the street by people they trust – friends and family, police, Special Branch (not that it exists) and politicians seeking public office.”
