Clive Palmer has attacked the Australian electoral system after winning the Federal seat of Fairfax.
“How the hell did this happen?” he asked after winning Fairfax by 36 votes.
Mr Palmer confessed that he did not expect to win a seat in parliament and that the Palmer United Party’s election campaign was simply meant to be a nuisance to the Federal Coalition.
Mr Palmer added that being required to attend parliament for the next three years was extremely inconvenient.
“This decision by a group of faceless voters in Fairfax has put back the cause of mining in this country by three years,” said an angry Mr Palmer. “Plus I don’t know how I’ll get time now to build more giant dinosaurs, the Titanic II or my Nelson Mandela mausoleum.”
Mr Palmer said that he would take the Fairfax result to the Court of Disputed Returns to get it overturned. He also demanded that the Australian Electoral Commission introduce reforms for future elections so that voters are required to produce identification documents at polling booths.
“As a winning candidate, I have the right to know who voted for me so I can sue these people for loss of income,” said Mr Palmer. “I will continue to fight the AEC about this until justice is done.”
