Prime Minister Julia Gillard has explained that her unusual decision to announce a September 14 election eight months in advance was motivated by economic considerations.
“Announcing the election date today enables individuals who do not want to be in Australia under an Abbott government to make the necessary travel arrangements as soon as possible.”
“In particular, I am mindful that Qantas’s Global Sale finishes today.”
“Members of my government have already booked flights to Chile and Argentina for this October.”
“It would be unfair if ordinary, decent Australians were deprived of the same opportunity.”
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott praised the economic good sense of Ms Gillard’s decision.
“I was worried that the Coalition victory party might have clashed with Schoolies or the Senior Formals.”
“Now we have the date, we can book the venue cheaply and start stocking up at Dan Murphy’s whenever they have a sale. Bewdy.”
