In a surprise move, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has indicated his Coalition government may support the introduction of marriage equality legislation in Australia.
Mr Abbott said he had been wrestling with the issue for some time and had listened to a number of senior government Ministers who have been pushing for legalising same sex marriage.
In particular Queensland Senator George Brandis is said to have been key in changing Mr Abbott’s mind on the issue.
“Right now there are lots of Australians who’d like to get married and can’t because of their sexuality,” Senator Brandis said at a recent Liberal Party function. “This situation is ridiculous. Think of how many weddings Coalition MPs are missing out on every year just because people are gay!”
