A children’s birthday party on the Gold Coast has been wowed by a surprise performance by Iggy Pop. Mr Jason Cormack, who hosted the party for his four-year old son Jack, said that the appearance by the ageing rock star was a happy mistake.
“Jack loves In The Night Garden and his favourite character is Igglepiggle. He likes Makka Pakka too – I mean, who doesn’t? – but Igglepiggle is definitely the one. When my sister got back from Bluesfest, she said: ‘You won’t believe who’s coming to Jack’s party’. Iggle-effing-piggle! What the! But my sister said it was legit. She’d got on the gear with someone at Byron who knew the Igster and assured her that Ig would love to pop up the Coast for a party. I couldn’t believe it.”
“When Jack’s party came round, I didn’t realise anything was wrong to begin with. The guy who turned up was pretty blue and I assumed he would be getting into his suit any minute. To be honest, even when he brought out a guitar and started singing ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’, I thought he was just a hard rocking Peter Combe. It was only when he ripped his shirt off during ‘Lust for Life’ that I realised my sister had made a mistake. But, hey, what a mistake! Iggy Pop was at a party at my place!”
Mr Cormack said that the punk icon took the case of mistaken identity in his leather-clad stride.
“Iggy was a great sport about it. When we explained the mix-up, he had a laugh and got all the kids to get on the jumping castle and he moshed in there with the best of them. I bet even Igglepiggle wouldn’t have done that!”
