The Labor Party has played down calls for Bill Shorten to be more interesting.
This is despite the most recent Fairfax opinion poll, which shows that support for the ALP under Mr Shorten is lagging far behind the Coalition government and is little better than that for other parties.
According to Labor insider Hugh Bromfley, the focus on the Federal Opposition leader’s personality and lack of charisma is unfair.
“Bill Shorten is a party man but not a party guy, if you know what I mean.”
“Sure, Bill Shorten might seem awkward and cringe-inducing but that’s only if you judge him on the things he says and does.”
“The people who know Bill Shorten well – and there must be some – say he’s actually sort of ok.”
Mr Bromfley says the Labor Party is confident Mr Shorten’s sort of okayness will shine through in the lead up to the next Federal election.
“In a month’s time, the polling will show the Labor Party is much more exciting to voters than the Melbourne Cup party.”
“And by January, we’re confident the interest in the Christmas party will have dipped too.”
“What you’ve gotta remember is that, unlike other parties, people are sort of interested in the Labor Party all year round.”
