Opposition leader Tony Abbott has expressed sorrow at the decision by Kevin Baker to quit as Liberal Party candidate for the NSW seat of Charlton.
Mr Baker’s decision comes after revelations by The Daily Telegraph that he operated a website for Mini owners that included lewd jokes and comments derogatory to women.
The decision to quit is a personal blow to Mr Abbott following his recent glowing comments about Mr Baker’s candidacy.
Only last week Mr Abbott referred to Mr Baker as young, feisty and someone with “a bit of sex appeal”.
Yesterday Mr Abbott added that Mr Baker was “not just a pretty face”.
Mr Abbott has now admitted that it was wrong to judge a male candidate by his appearance.
“From now on, I will only judge female candidates by their appearance. With men, it is probably safest not to make any judgements at all.”
