In a coup for Australian television, Channel 9 has announced that Justice Michael Kirby will be a new judge on The Voice in 2014.
The retired High Court judge will join the high-rating reality talent show as the replacement for outgoing judge, Seal.
“With more than 25 years on the bench, Justice Michael Kirby is one of Australia’s – and the world’s – most respected judges,” said a Channel 9 press release. “A household name who is no stranger to controvery, ‘Kirbs’ has shown that he is willing to dissent from other judges and speak out for voices he believes in. Channel 9 is delighted to have this champion of fairness and justice on the judging panel of The Voice in 2014 and beyond.”
Justice Kirby said he was looking forward to taking a seat alongside Ricky Martin, Joel Madden and the other new judicial appointment, Kylie Minogue.
“I miss the collegiate atmosphere of the High Court. It will be fabulous to get back to work again, making important decisions that affect the lives of everyday Australians.”
Justice Kirby confessed that working alongside Kylie Minogue would be a special thrill.
“People always tell me I’m a gay icon but I tell them: no, Kylie is a gay icon. I can’t believe I get to make decisions alongside her. It sure as hell beats going to work with Bill Gummow and Mary Gaudron.”
