In a win for viewers, Australian television channels have agreed to broadcast more sport in between gambling advertisements.
With the Spring Racing Carnival now underway, Channel 7 has announced it will increase the amount of horse racing shown between advertisements for CrownBet, Ladbrokes, SportsBet and other corporate bookmakers.
“During recent Spring Carnivals, we’ve broadcast a horse race every 40 minutes,” says Head of Channel 7 Sport, Jeff Travers.
“But with the current interest in gambling ads, that’s not enough any more.”
Mr Travers hopes the addition of more horse racing on Channel 7 will give gambling ads greater context and relevance to viewers.
“Gambling ads are the funniest and most entertaining things on TV. And they’re even better if you have more to bet on.”
Channel 9 is also tweaking its gambling ads coverage for 2016.
“Traditionally, gambling ads during the football are only about football,” notes Channel 9’s Gary Deakin.
“If we can squeeze some golf, horse racing and IPL into Friday Night Football next year, the ratings for our gambling ads should shoot through the roof!”
