Premier Campbell Newman has defended his plan to double electoral terms in Queensland from three years to six.
“I will be making no apologies for going into all areas and cutting things that are preventing us funding more police, more fire fighters, more nurses, more doctors,” said Mr Newman.
“Obviously, given the LNP’s huge mandate to govern, an election in three years’ time is a complete waste of taxpayer money.”
Mr Newman indicated that, if necessary, he would also consider abolishing opposition parties if this would allow his government to devote more time and money to the state’s essential services.
The state’s police, fire fighters, nurses and doctors have welcomed the moves.
