Fears of a Campbell Newman leadership vacuum have been quashed, with Mr Newman announcing he will lead an LNP government even if he fails to win the seat of Ashgrove in the upcoming state election.
“Why wouldn’t I?” said Mr Newman.
“I have been able to lead the LNP for the last 12 months without a seat in parliament. I see no barrier to leading the party in government in a similar manner.”
“If anything, not having a seat will give me even more time to better serve the people of Queensland.”
Mr Newman stated that he had already identified someone within the party who was willing to hold the ceremonial role of Premier without interfering with decision-making.
Premier Anna Bligh has reacted to Newman’s announcement by confirming that her shadow cabinet will likewise operate from outside the parliamentary chamber if, as expected, most current members lose their seats.
