Gold Coast United owner Clive Palmer has defended his controversial decision to hand the struggling club’s captaincy to a player with no A-League experience – rookie recruit Campbell Newman.
“So what if the guy’s never played soccer,” said Palmer. “He’s never sat in parliament and he’s the leader of the bloody LNP.”
“With that sort of ability, the guy is obviously a freak.”
Upset by the “please explain” demand issued by Football Federation Australia, Palmer intimated that he may even reconsider all involvement in sport.
“I’ve poured a lot of money into hopeless organisations like Gold Coast United and the LNP.”
“Hey, I don’t even like politics. It’s a stupid game. Rugby league is better.”
The head of the new Rugby League Commission welcomed Palmer’s comments, noting that they confirmed that rugby league was finally above politics.
