The hunt for La Boite Theatre Company’s new Artistic Director is over.
In a coup for Brisbane theatre, the La Boite board will announce that Russell Crowe and his estranged wife Danielle Spencer will jointly take on the Artistic Director role from later this year.
“Brisbane is Australia’s new world city and the host of G20. We’re just as exciting as Sydney or Melbourne,” said a La Boite board member in the toilets at this week’s Matilda awards.
“So, if Sydney Theatre Company can have Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton, anything they can do, we can do better.”
Audience numbers increased dramatically at STC after Blanchett and Upton took over. La Boite is hoping for a similar ‘star factor’ audience boost of its own.
Crowe and Spencer are rumoured to have beaten a star-studded field of candidates for the Artistic Director job, including high profile duos Bob and Bindi Irwin, Peter Andre and Jordan, and Jimmy Giggle and his owl sidekick Hoot.
While Crowe and Spencer’s 2015 season is yet to be announced, it is understood a musical adaptation of Gladiator could be included.
In unrelated news, the South Sydney Rabbitohs have announced they will move to Brisbane next season.
