Besieged Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced a new tax to put an end to speculation about his leadership.
Under the leadership speculation tax, any publisher or broadcaster who runs stories about changes to the Coalition leadership will be required to pay a higher rate of tax.
Larger organisations such as News Limited will be penalised by being required to pay tax.
“My government should be spending its time running the country, not defending its leadership,” said Mr Abbott.
“A leadership speculation tax is a clean and productive way of freeing up the government’s time and penalising those who pollute Australia with rumour and innuendo.”
Federal Labor leader Bill Shorten has pledged his bipartisan support to the leadership speculation tax and has proposed it be extended to speculation about the Opposition leadership.
