The leadership challenge against Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has caused further civil unrest in Ukraine.
Despite his unpopularity at home, Mr Abbott is a folk hero in the Ukraine after standing up to Vladimir Putin over the MH17 tragedy.
After news of the Tony Abbott spill was broadcast in the former Russian state, large groups gathered on the street to express their anger and despair.
“If Tony Abbott is forced from power, democracy is dead,” one protester told the BBC.
Another Kiev resident expressed her solidarity with a large banner proclaiming “JE SUIS TONY!”
Russia blamed for Tony Abbott spill
Ukrainian social media has labelled the Tony Abbott spill a Kremlin-led conspiracy.
The following tweet was typical of the country’s mood:
No one who stands up to Putin is safe. Not even on the other side of the world #SaveTony #libspill
Back in Australia, conservative elements of the Liberal Party have latched onto the Ukrainian reaction.
Said one backbencher: “The Putin link only confirms our long-held suspicions that Malcolm Turnbull is some kind of communist.”
