Malcolm Turnbull is confident the American sleepover he has organised for up to 1,250 refugees on Nauru and Manus Island will still go ahead.
Despite reports that Donald Trump was seeking to cancel the sleepover, Mr Turnbull said the refugees would be on their way to the United States very soon.
“Let’s be clear. This sleepover was organised months ago.”
“I spoke to a very pleasant man named Barack and he said he would love to have the refugees at his place for as long as I needed.”
“I’m not sure who rang me from America the other day but he definitely wasn’t in charge. He just swore a lot. And he didn’t even know what a refugee was!”
Mr Turnbull stressed that it was not only inconvenient for the United States to cancel the refugee sleepover at the last minute, it was impolite.
“I’ve made plans for the next couple of years so I couldn’t possibly look after the refugees now.”
“The Americans agreed to this sleepover, so it’s really not my problem any more.”
